LIVING WITH LIZZIE
My Ilizarov Frame Journey
My name is Natalie, I am 34, married and a full time working mum to two young children.
On the 29th November 2018 my life was turned upside down when I was hit head on by another car, and I knew instantly I had broken my leg. Life suddently stopped, and I spent 5 days in hospital where I underwent surgery on my leg the following day and was fitted with my Ilizarov frame, affectionally named 'Lizzie'!
The injury to my leg was quite extensive, I had a right ankle pilon fracture which is a major injury and life changing as the doctors told me, surgery was the only option and I was told I would need to wear the frame for 3-6 months. The NHS doctors and nurses who looked after me were great but it was all very scary, I had never heard of one of these frames, I was taking a lot of pain relief and those first few days just felt like a blur. The main thing that stood out to me was that they said I could weight bear straight away which for me was so important with having two children. I needed to know that, as a mum, I could at least do the basic things around the house and get upstairs to read them a story at night.
I am currently frame free and working on getting my range of movement back... Please feel free to join me on this journey!
